Noted documentarian Michael Moore will release his latest movie free online later this month.
Moore, director of the excellent “Fahrenheit 9/11″ and “Sicko,” is set to release “Slacker Uprising,” which saw Moore embark upon a 62-city tour during the 2004 presidental election to rally young voters.
The film will be available starting Sept. 23 at its official Web site, with registration under way at the site.
Aside from being a nice token of appreciation to his fans, Moore may usher in a new way to distribute films by doing this. “Sicko” ($24 million) and “Fahrenheit 9/11″ ($119 million) were big moneymakers for him, but he opted to go the Internet route perhaps to test the waters for how big online interest will be. The movie will only be available for three weeks, so this might be a way to spark publicity, then charge for the film thereafter via download or DVD.
Although his films have a heavy liberal slant, Moore is quite good at making a good argument. Even if you don’t agree with him, I would recommend checking out “Uprising” and his many other films, which include the fictional “Canadian Bacon,” which was based and shot in Niagara Falls.
